Honeymoon Ideas
Sara asked:

I am going to get married in 11/07. I am looking for ideas for a honeymoon. I think I am thinking along the line of another country (Italy, Greece, Europe?). I don’t want to be in an island or cruise (don’t want to be in a beach all week). Any ideas? Ofcourse I am looking for something affordable as well but still it should be nice. Anyone have ideas of places or good packages out there?

The mountains and a ski resort might be a nice idea. It would provide a romantic atmosphere with gorgeous scenery and cozy fireplaces.

why don’t you go to Paris, France best romance place to be in the world. I wouldn’t mind going there visit the Eiffel Tower and do all sorts of things..it shouldn’t be too pricey but check it out.

My Wife was wanting a similar honeymoon as you described. We went to England for a couple of days and saw all the sights, then we went to Scotland and toured the castles and countryside. I managed to sneak in a game of golf at the famous St. Andrews and my wife shopped all day. We also got to spend a couple of nights in an old Scottish Castle rather than a hotel. We finished out our trip in Ireland, which my Wife wanted to visit all her life. All of it was a fantastic trip, a honeymoon of a lifetime, and we had a great time. Surprisingly it was quite affordable and we booked all of our travel arrangements and hotel accomadations with our local travel agent. Best Wishes for your marriage.

Have you considered escorted tour packages. They arrange everything. Your job is to show up and take pictures. My husband and I are looking into this for ourselves for our 10th anniversary (3yrs away)

We went on a Carnival Cruise of the Carribean for $2500 plus spending money. It was a lot of fun.

You don’t have to go to another country for your honeymoon. Go to Vegas and you’ll feel like you’ve been to Italy, France, the Caribbean, New York, Arabia, etc. With all of the beautifully themed hotels and casinos, you can experience them all in one place. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon almost 2 years ago and we had so much fun. It’s EXTREMELY affordable. We stayed in a fountain view (meaning the Bellagio fountains!) at the Aladdin and it was less than $1800 for an entire week including airfare and 2 entertainment cards! There are tons of things to do without having to gamble. The museums & attractions, art exhibits, restaurants, shopping, tours, and rides will keep you very busy. Plus, there’s all kinds of Broadway type shows and concerts everyday. We saw Blue Man Group and it was awesome. Check it out…you definitely wouldn’t regret it! :-)

Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia.
You could spend a day at the most beautiful beaches in the world, go up in the mountains, 20 min drive for spectacular views, wineries, bed and breakfasts….Australia Zoo, Brisbane for a river cruise aboard the kookaburra queen paddle steamer (seafood feast!) All with a beautiful sub tropical climate.
Also Carnival cruise to Mexico is interesting and the food is divine. Would make for a great honeymoon. Mexico is cool, lots of shopping bargains and fun.

In November you will want to travel somewhere warm. Italy will be beginning to cool down a bit. The Almafi coast, particularly the city of Ravello is a wonderful place. From there you can tour to many places for day trips or just stay and love the town!

Ireland is a good choice, but might be pretty cold. I would think New Zealand. Its beautiful, you can see the volcanoes and beaches. The scenery is awesome and if you like extreme sports or bungie jumping they have all that too!

If you’re thinking of Italy, consider a few nights in each of the most romantic cities (Venice, Rome, Florence) and maybe a few nights in a villa in Tuscany.

Greece: what we find is most popular is the trio of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. But I’d also consider Crete (especially Elounda).

If you’re more adventurous, think about Australia or New Zealand…tons to do and see, and you can combine some beach time with exploring (nature + historical sights).

For my own honeymoon, we combined safaris in Kenya with a week or so at more traditional resorts in the Seychelles (including a fabulous private island resort called Desroches Island).

Hawaii can be a great (and affordable) choice if you work with a real expert, so you don’t get stuck in the super-touristy areas. Many of the Hawaii suppliers we use can create combinations of multiple islands, or different parts of the same island so that you can get a bit of beach & nightlife and combine that with some seclusion and romantic quiet time.

(FYI, I am co-founder of TheBigDay honeymoon travel & registry company, so my thoughts are based on our experiences helping tens of thousands of honeymoon couples over the past couple of years.)

In the sources list below I’ve put links to some Greece specials, and also some safari packages from our website.

Below those links is a link to an article on our site that I wrote that gives much more detailed advice on choosing your honeymoon destination.

Michael.
