How about a prepaid credit card. Tell them you wish to buy a tank of gas, or two, or three, or four… how many can you afford?
They will remember you every fill-up.
There are some fun books out there: roadside attractions (see below), Lets Go California, etc. Or make them some good mix CDs for the trip.
A decent travel BBQ, portable, lightweight hammocks, books on…mp3 i guess, a small disco ball to hang under the rear view mirror, camping chairs, a plug-in electric kettle (or water heater pretty much anything to make a quick cup of coffee or tea), a plug in fridge, and decent sunglasses for driving.

Fill the thing with goodies that travels need like wet naps, beef jerky, a travel guide to the weird and wonderful, a camera … of if they have a digital camera a memory card. Some sheepskin seatcovers.
